徳蔵はデザインに対する造詣が深く、稀有の名工「高橋楽山」の生み出す洞窟観音の石像群のデザインにも積極的に関わりを持ちました。この観音像全体のバランスや優雅に纏う衣の造形はまさに現代の洗練された感性に通じており、さらに観音が立つ岩窟までもが徳蔵の持つ世界観そのままに荘厳に具現化されています。その見事な空間全体が近代仏教美術の傑作と言えるのです
洞窟観音の持つ唯一無比とも云える芸術的価値はここにあります。楽山による観音の造形という評価だけでは、数千年の歴史を誇る仏教芸術の膨大な作品群の中、その個性の差別化は不可能です。しかしながら、仏教画に見られる観音は雲上や岩上、山間や滝壺近くなど、背景と共に描かれることがほとんどです。楽山と徳蔵により、これら仏教画に描かれた信仰の世界が具現化されているのが、唯一洞窟観音なのです
観音像によっては1年を要したものもありました。そして、それぞれの観音の云われに合わせた背景が、溶岩や群馬県産の三波石を使って手作業で丁寧に作りこまれています
洞窟深部に現れる巨大なホールの装飾はまさに圧巻です。20ｍ近い高さの天井の一つ一つの溶岩装飾まで、まさに手塩にかけた丁寧な仕事はまさに一見の価値ありと言えます
Tokuzo was very knowledgeable in the field of design, and was
also actively involved in designing the Doukutsu Kannon statues
that were created by the genius sculptor Rakuzan. The overall
balance of the statues and the clothing of Kannon are quite
similar to the refined aesthetic of the present day, and even
the cave on which Kannon stands represents Tokuzo’s view of the
world. This entire space could be called a masterpiece of
modern Buddhist art.
This is the unique artistic value of Doukutsu Kannon. If you
only look at Rakuzan’s depictions of Kannon, it is hard to say
what sets it apart from the many other Buddhist artworks that
have been created over its millennia-long history. However, the
vast majority of Buddhist depictions of Kannon show the
background along with her, whether it’s snow, rocks, mountains,
waterfalls, etc. Doukutsu Kannon, created by Rakuzan and
Tokuzo, is the only Buddhist artwork where the world of the
gods is made real.
Some of these Kannon statues supposedly took Rakuzan more than
a year to make. Backgrounds worthy of the glory of Kannon were
created by hand, using materials like volcanic rock and
Sanbaseki stone from Gunma Prefecture.
The decorations on the hall deep in the cave are truly
astonishing. Every detail was crafted meticulously, even the
volcanic rock adornments on the nearly 20m high ceiling; it is
undeniably worth the visit.
1964年に徳蔵が没するまで工事は続きましたが、当初目標とした800mの坑道は、強固な板鼻層に阻まれ半分の450mで未完成のまま終了しました。洞窟出口付近では、現在もその堀かけの部分を見ることができますが、工事が止まった当時のまま、土が風化崩れ落ちることなく状態が保たれているのは、如何に地盤が強固な物であるかを物語っています
拝観者の皆様が今も安全に参拝できるのは、この地盤のお蔭とも云えるのではないでしょうか
洞窟内は年間およそ17℃に保たれています
40℃近い猛暑の中でも、洞窟内は自然に涼しく保たれています

The work continued until Tokuzo’s death in 1964, but they were
unable to reach their goal of an 800m deep cave due to the hard
ground, and the project ended unfinished at a depth of 450m
(including areas not open to the public), half of their
original goal.
The temperature of the cave is kept at around 17°C throughout
the year. Even when the outside world is at the sweltering heat
of 40°C, the cave is kept naturally cool. Why not visit to cool
off in summer!!
